8 Dark Thrillers to Cross Off Your #TBR Before Spring

Spring is almost in the air, Savvy Readers! It’s my favourite season, because it’s finally time to get outside and choose light, happy books to read, like these ones! Spring has no place for those dark, scary thrillers that seemed so perfect for a cold winter night.

And so, as the season changes and warmer weather approaches, perhaps it’s time to cross off a few of those darker titles on your #TBR…

What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan

A typical Sunday morning in the park suddenly turns into every mother’s worst nightmare, as eight-year-old Ben vanishes. Rachel Jenner’s life is flipped upside down when search parties fail to turn up any clues leading to her missing son. With the clock ticking, Rachel becomes more and more desperate and unhinged. Was this the work of a sadistic stranger, or worse, somebody close to Rachel? This book is so absorbing, it’s hard not to finish in one sitting!

Perfect Remains by Helen Fields

There’s a twisted murderer on the loose in the Highlands, and he’s an expert at covering his tracks. Detective Luc Callanach attempts to solve the case without any leads or evidence, and he soon discovers that this case is much more disturbing than he could have ever imagined… This psychological mystery is perfect for the last few days of cold weather. You’ll be hiding under the covers with this one!

A Simple Favour by Darcey Bell

You think you know your best friend, but how well can you really know somebody? Stephanie is about to find out. When Emily asks if Stephanie can pick up her son from school, she doesn’t think twice. But when Emily disappears and doesn’t answer any calls, Stephanie knows something is horribly wrong. Soon, Emily’s body is discovered, and Stephanie realizes the nightmare is just beginning. If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, A Simple Favour is the book for you!

The Kept Woman by Karin Slaughter

Sometimes, it’s hard to let go of the people from your past. When the body of a retired cop is discovered at a construction site, investigator Will Trent is called in to solve the case. Things get more complicated when evidence links back to Will’s estranged wife. How far will Will go to protect the people he loves? This is an electric murder-mystery with shady characters and all the plot twists you’ll ever need!

The Spider and the Fly by Claudia Rowe

This literary true crime story is a gripping tale of a female journalist and her unusually close relationship with a convicted serial killer. Both memoir and thriller, The Spider and the Fly explores the darkness that exists inside all of us and shares a first-hand look at a small town destroyed by tragedy. The fact that this is a true story makes it all the more scary ‒ read it at night if you dare!

The Possessions by Sara Flannery Murphy

The Elysian Society offers a unique service: the chance to reconnect with lost loved ones through “bodies.” Edie has been working as body for five years. Things quickly change when she falls in love with a client whose wife died under very mysterious circumstances. The Possessions is a story of obsession, loneliness, and secrets. It’s a page-turner that you absolutely NEED to read – the ending is a shocker!

The Sisters by Claire Douglas

Abi is haunted by the death of her twin sister, and vows to make a fresh start in Bath. Abi meets twins Beatrice and Ben, and she is quickly wrapped up in their world.  But when strange things begin to happen and threating notes appear, Abi quickly starts to doubt that her new friends are being completely truthful. The narrative is carefully crafted and keeps your guessing until the very end. I highly recommend this twisted thriller!

Nocturnal Animals by Austin Wright

Read the book that inspired the acclaimed new movie! Susan Morrow is confronted by the past when she receives a manuscript of her ex-husband Edward’s first novel. Edward’s story is dark and violent, and Susan discovers elements that bear an eerie resemblance to real life. Reading the manuscript, Susan is drawn back into the darkness of her past. Nocturnal Animals blends two thrilling stories together as it jumps back and forth between Susan and the fictional family in the manuscript. This book is mesmerizing and leaves you feeling completely unsettled. It’s definitely worth a read!
